Materials’ Afterlife  with the designer Sanchari Mahapatra, a professional color, materials and textile designer who has worked in the automotive and textile industries for the last 12 years, will talk about her life, work, and her projects, including “Materials’ Afterlife” which involved the rebirth of Detroit automotive leather waste into playful balls for children.

Sanchari Mahapatra is a Cultural Detective, unearthing the secrets of cultural puzzles to make sense in creating something new. As a professional Color, Materials and Textile designer I have been working in the automotive and textile industries for the last 12 years. I have worked and lived in diverse cultures such as India and the US which fuels my creative work. Growing up in India, sustainability became a way of life and it continues to be my core. I try to experiment with unloved and discarded materials to find new meanings and purposes. Materials’ Afterlife is one such project which starts by exploring the rebirth of Detroit Automotive leather waste and ends up as playful balls for children.
