Opening Reception of solo exhibition by MIT-based Matter Design (Brandon Clifford + Jo Lobdell) featuring collaborative works with NY-based artist, Sanford Biggers. This immersive and site-specific exhibition grounds the viewer through an unwavering awareness of their physical environment while deconstructing preconceived notions of our past and transcending historical constructs.
Clifford is best known for moving massive stones in his speculative works that disrupt common practices and challenge default solutions. Clifford is an associate professor of architecture at MIT and is recipient of the American Academy in Rome Prize, TED Fellowship, SOM Prize, and more.
Lobdell finds forms for topics that go unseen, creating objects that speak to our fears, curiosities, and possibilities. Lobdell received an MFA in sculpture from Cranbrook Academy of Art, a BFA from Lesley University, and an AAS from Parsons School of Design. Her work at Matter Design has been exhibited at MoMA PS1.
Biggers’ work is an interplay of narrative, perspective, and history that speaks to current social, political, and economic happenings while also examining the contexts that bore them. Biggers’ collaboration with Matter Design developed during his time as the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Visiting Professor + Scholar in the MIT Department of Architecture.
