Living Arts engages Detroit youth, teachers and families in transformative experiences in the performing, visual, literary and media arts. Through artist residencies in schools across Detroit and robust out-of-school offerings focused in Southwest Detroit, we increase youth’s academic achievement, develop their artistic skills and strengthen our schools and communities.

Living Arts

In-school arts residencies and classes which focus primarily on developing students’ artistic skills in performing, literary, visual or media arts, while strengthening their overall school engagement and approaches to learning. (Offered during the school day, after school, and in summer school.)

In-school arts offerings also include teacher professional development workshops and parent/family workshops to train teachers and parents in arts education strategies to support student learning.

Our arts content is informed by the National Arts Standards which encourage students to not only create art, but to learn to communicate their ideas, think critically about their work, and connect what that work to the world around them.

Living Arts’ flagship community event is Teatro Chico. Spanish for “Little Theater,” Teatro Chico is a performance series that presents outstanding youth and professional Detroit artists in Southwest Detroit at the Mexicantown Mercado. Multiple art disciplines are showcased including dance, music, visual art, storytelling and performance art.  Events often include drop-in art making workshops.
